Hypothesis Tests for a Population Proportion

Example:
A bag of M & M's contains 10 red out of 58 total M & M's. Test the null hypothesis that this bag was drawn from a population with 27% red M & M's.

Solution:
You may use 1-prop Z test since you want to test the hypothesis a sample proportion is not equal, greater than, or less than the known proportion. From the statistical data list, press "F3" (TEST), then press "F1" (Z), and then press "F3" (1-P).

Enter the sample proportion test condition (in this case less than (<)), expected sample proportion, sample value, sample size. Press "F1" (CALC) to calculate. Press "F6" (DRAW) to draw.

The p-value is about 0.047. Since this is a low p-value, you might be inclined to reject the null hypothesis. The bag was probably drawn from the population less than 27% red M & M's.
