Natural Catenary by Nevels Nevels

Given a photo of a pile of stones formed into an arch, students will model the shape of the stones using equations for a catenary curve. Using their knowledge of conic sections, students will develop knowledge of hyperbolic functions.

Lesson Objectives:


• - Write equivalent forms of equation and solve them with fluency-mentally or with paper and pencil in simple cases and using technology in all cases.
• - Use geometric ideas to solve problems in, and gain insights into, other disciplines and other areas of interests such as art and architecture.
