Algebra 1 Level

Objective:To show that objects dropped from the same height will cover the distance in the same amount of time.

Engage: Discuss with the students the age-old question "Which is heavier a pound of feathers or a pound of lead?" Then discuss which would land first if dropped off the roof of the same building.

Explore: Complete the activity using the EA-100 and the CFX-9850.

Equipment

Motion Detectors
EA-100s
CFX-9850G+
balls of varying shapes and weights ex. Ping Pong, racquetball, beach ball, tennis ball, Koosh ball
meter sticks - for measuring height
tape
assorted other soft object suitable for dropping
data communication cable
  • Perform the experiment as follows:
    Tape the motion detector, facing up, to the side of a table. It is very important that this be securely placed.
    Make sure the motion detector is plugged into the SONIC port of the EA-100. DO NOT connect the EA-100 to the calculator.
    To collect data points, use a meter stick to measure a specific height from the face of the motion detector. Record that height and use for all balls, or other objects, dropped.
    To perform the experiment, drop the object onto the table, as close as possible to the motion detector, so that the object will remain within the cone of detection for as long as possible.
    To operate the EA-100 manually, use the following keystrokes:

     

    NOTE: It is imperative that the object be dropped as rapidly as possible following the pressing of the TRIGGER.

    Keystroke Explanation
    1. Press[SHIFT][MODE]
    "Set-up"
    1. Press [DATALOG] until "20 mSec" appears "Next"
    Press [DATALOG] several times until the sample time you want appears (20 mSec)
    1. Press[TRIGGER]
    Chooses the 5 Sec as the time
    1. Press[DATALOG] until "10" appears
    Press [DATALOG] several times until    the number of sample points you want appears (10)
    1. Press[TRIGGER]
    Chooses 50 as the number of samples
    1. Press [DATALOG] until 1 appears "Next" Press [DATALOG] until you see the time consideration you want
    In this case, the time will be collected as data
    1. Press[TRIGGER]
    Selects time consideration
    1. Press[TRIGGER]
    Begins sampling.  This means that it is time to drop the objects
  • Retrieve the data from the EA-100:
    1. Connect EA-100 to CFX-9850G+ using the data communication link
    2. Turn on CFX-9850G+ and choose Run (1) from the menu
    3. Press SHIFT VARS {PRGM}
    4. Press F6 (>) , then I/O {F4}
    5. Press Recu (F4) {Receive( }
    6. Press OPTN, List {F1}, List {F1} ,1, close Parenthesis { ) }
    7. Press SHIFT EXE {ø }
    8. Press Recu (F4) {Receive( }
    9. Press OPTN, List {F1}, List {F1} ,2, close Parenthesis { ) }
    10. Press EXE
  • The data should now be listed in List 1 and List 2.
  • For the next part of the procedure you will be operating in the STAT menu.
    1. After entering the STAT menu, you should find List 1 through List 2
    2. Press GRAPH {F1}
    3. Press SEL {F4}
    4. StatGraph 1 : DrawOn
    5. EXIT
    6. Press SET {F6}

      Frequency : 1
      Mark Type : ?
      Graph Color: CHOICE

    After the students have gotten a graph, use the graph to determine the time (x-axis) that the object traveled to the ground ( or lowest point.) Be sure that the students check each y-axis to insure that objects are being dropped from a uniform height. Students will check several different balls to determine whether the time remained constant.


  • Explain: Have the groups come together to compare results. Discuss the similarities and differences of their findings. Students should discuss whether there are other times when the objects are the same height. Discuss whether the curves are narrow or wide.

    Elaborate:Have students drop other objects from the same height. They should discuss the shape, weight, and accuracy of performing the experiment. Have students discuss other factors that might change the results obtained.

    Evaluate Have students write a paper describing the procedures and findings of this activity.
